This masterclass will be held in a private garden belonging to one of Sean’s long-term clients, where together they have been developing a garden narrative and working as a team, developing a thread or ‘narrative’ connecting the different spaces and allowing for each area to have a sense of place and the whole to be coherent.  Annie will join Sean for this event and together they will describe their working practice and approach to design and planting. There will be a workshop element to this day, where Annie and Sean will be asking the participants to observe and analyse particular areas of the garden, as well as sketching and group discussions, making this event particularly useful for new designers, students and those wishing to redesign their own gardens.  The day will include a delicious home cooked organic lunch from the vegetable garden with refreshments throughout the day.

Adderstone House has a 10 acre garden within a coastal Northumbrian landscape. There are formal gardens around the house, a walled garden, sunken garden and dry border. Much of the garden is still under development with a long term strategy to compartmentalise it into more intimate manageable garden spaces.

Sean Murray is a garden designer and horticulturalist with 40 years of experience, including project managing garden builds in the NHS and Prison Service.  In 2015 Sean won the BBC/RHS The great Chelsea Challenge and went on to design and build a garden on main Avenue at the RHS Chelsea flower show. He is also an international Floral Demonstrator, and gives talks and runs Flower Schools in partnership with his wife Eilleen. www.gardennarratives.co.uk

Annie Guilfoyle has a degree in garden design from Middlesex University and runs a design consultancy in West Sussex. This one-day experience (10am – 5pm) welcomes anyone seeking design solutions to improve their existing garden.

The venue is the beautiful Adderstone House, a Victorian house and gardens located near the dramatic Northumberland coastline consisting of a walled garden, orchard, sunken garden, formal garden, vineyard and millpond.

Sean’s relaxed and informal style of teaching within small class numbers lends itself to a truly memorable day.  A mix of classroom and practical outdoor learning provides a unique opportunity to experience design theory being applied in practice.  You will see how the 10 ½ acre garden is being continually developed.

A home cooked lunch along with beverages and light refreshments throughout the day will be provided by our hosts, John and Pauline Clough.  Adderstone is easily accessible by road.  Mainline train stations at Berwick and Alnmouth are within 20 minutes and Newcastle Airport is 40 miles away.
